Today, surgeons are increasing performing robotic surgery to treat various complex conditions. However, there are still a few limitations. Not all minimally invasive procedures can be completed with the help of a robot. Moreover, not all medical cases are right for robotic surgery. Endoscopic or open surgery is still the preferred option in many cases.    

Some of the more common procedures that use this technique include:

  • Cardiovascular surgery
  • Head and neck surgery
  • Gynaecologic surgery
  • Partial knee replacement surgery
  • Abdominal, colon and rectal surgery
  • Urologic surgery

Robotic surgery is used to perform various types of minimally-invasive heart surgeries to treat several heart conditions, including heart valve disease, atrial septal defect, coronary artery disease and mitral valve disease.

In robotic-assisted cardiovascular surgery, the entire procedure is performed between the ribs through small incisions made in the right side of the chest instead of splitting the breastbone as in traditional open-heart surgery.

Robotic head and neck surgery

Transoral robotic surgery or robotic head and neck surgery is often performed to treat cancers of the throat, tongue, soft palate and tonsils. The smaller sized robotic instruments make it easier for surgeons to operate on these difficult-to-reach areas of the mouth and throat with better precision and flexibility than is possible with conventional surgery. It also gives the surgeon a clearer view of the surgical area.  Robotic thyroid surgery is also often used to treat cancer of the thyroid.    

Robotic-assisted gynaecologic surgery

Surgeons often used robotic systems to aid in various types of gynaecologic procedures including hysterectomy and myomectomy. Robotic surgery can be performed to treat numerous gynaecologic conditions, including hysterectomy, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal fistulas and pelvic organ prolapsed. Because of the higher flexible of robotic arms as compared to conventional laparoscopic tools, the procedure and suturing operate can be done with greater accuracy. Depending on the procedure and the patient’s age, robotic surgery also may help improve reproductive health and safeguard the patient’s fertility. 

Robotic surgery for partial knee replacement surgery

Robotic systems are often used in partial knee replacement surgery  in people who have limited osteoarthritis.

Robotic abdominal, colon and rectal surgery

Robotic surgery is increasingly being used to treat many types of abdominal conditions and colon and rectal conditions, including pancreatic disorders and cancers of the liver, gallbladder, colon and rectum.

In all of these cases, the robotic arms offer more flexibility, greater accuracy and easier access to hard-to-reach areas as compared to traditional laparoscopic tools. This reduces the risk to delicate nerves and tissues in the area.

Robotic urologic surgery

Urologic surgeons perform robotic surgery to treat various conditions, including benign prostatic obstruction, lymph node dissection, urethral reconstruction, fistulas, bladder diverticula and cancers of the bladder, kidney, testicles and prostrate. Robotic prostatectomy is now commonly used by urologic surgeons to treat prostate cancer.

In all cases, the result of undergoing robotic-assisted surgery is a lower risk of complications, less blood loss, smaller scars and less pain. Recovery too is quicker, with many patients returning to their regular activities much sooner than ever before.
