What All Australian Med Students Should Know About AMSA

If you are a medical student studying in one of Australia’s medical schools, knowing a little bit about the AMSA could be very beneficial.

This is an independent association that counts all medical students in Australia as its members. AMSA started off as a conference organised to network Australia’s medical students. Since its launch in 1960, it has grown to become the peak representative body for medical students across Australia. The main aim of this organisation is to inform, connect and represent medical students studying at all medical schools in Australia by means of advocacy campaigns, well-being projects, community events and a range of medical publications.

The organisation’s advocacy priorities for 2014 include:

Ensuring quality of medical education

Quality internships for all students

Mental health

Medical student income support

Supporting students in rural clinical schools

National internship application process

AMSA Membership Eligibility & Benefits

All medical students studying in any Australian medical school automatically become members of AMSA. AMSA membership opens up an array of benefits for students, including considerable discounts at select retailers and service providers.

AMSA members are also eligible to apply for numerous bursaries and scholarships set up to reward accomplishments in rural health, research and international clinical work. AMSA also conducts several contests that all students are eligible to enter for the duration of their degree.

The AMSA Alumni provides a network for members to maintain communication with peers, to exchange knowledge about the growing field of medicine and for past members to reminisce about their days as medical students.

AMSA National Convention

The AMSA National Convention is an annual conference that brings together all medical students from every corner of Australia as well as students from New Zealand. When it was launched in 1960, the AMSA National Convention was just a simple gathering organised to share knowledge and experiences. Twenty five years, it has grown and evolved to be the highlight of the medical student calendar. The AMSA National Convention is today one of the largest annual gatherings for medical students who meet to exchange innovative and progressive ideas amongst the past and present members of the medical profession.

The Convention is a seven day event filled with academic and social events. The academic program runs for 5 days, during which students attend workshops and inspirational talks delivered by world renowned professionals and experts in their particular specialties. Evenings are reserved for social gatherings, which are the highlight of the convention as students network with peers from across Australia and New Zealand. The convention culminates in a Gala Ball that acts as the closing function. The 2014 AMSA National Convention is scheduled to run from July 6th to July 13th at the Adelaide Convention Centre in the city of Adelaide.

Vampire Cup

The Vampire Cup is another popular initiative conducted by the AMSA. It is a national blood drive that is held in association with the Australian Red Cross. The blood drive is usually held over the months of July/August each year.
