Special Project

Hospital Work Experience : Africa : December 2017

Placements for Year 11 & 12 students shadowing doctors, nurses or midwives

If you’re applying to medical or nursing school, a Gap Medics placement can give you invaluable real-life work experience in a busy hospital setting – and help you make the best decisions about your future career.

To celebrate the expansion of our Africa programme, we’re offering a limited number of spaces on a special pre-launch project this Christmas. You’ll be on the front line of clinical medicine and surgery in one of Botswana’s busiest hospitals, and staying in our exclusive safari lodge right on the edge of some of the most spectacular wildlife country on Earth! Whether you come alone or with friends, you’ll join like-minded students from across Australia and the rest of the world, all supported by our own dedicated staff team in your African home from home.

Your hospital placement

The whole point of our programme is to give you first hand experience, and from Monday to Friday you’ll be in your scrubs alongside local health professionals in a range of clinical settings, from wards to the operating room, delivery suite and specialist clinics.

Expert supervision is critical, and you’ll be assigned a personal mentor based on the placement type you choose – an experienced doctor, nurse, midwife or dentist. Your mentor is there both to keep you safe in the hospital environment, and to help you understand his or her role, and the roles of rest the of the clinical team.

If you’re an aspiring medical or nursing student, we’ll work with you to place you in the most appropriate department, based on your preferences and availability in the local hospital. In Botswana, we have opportunities in paediatrics, internal medicine, maternity, general and orthopaedic surgery, and a number of more specialist departments.

For budding midwives, we have the chance for you to experience the full spectrum of maternity care, from the busy antenatal wards to deliveries by both natural birth and Caesarean section, and postnatal care services.

Your adventure

Outside the hospital, your African adventure awaits! We’re famous for our Gap Medics houses, and in Botswana we’ve taken it to another level with a stunning safari eco lodge on the bank of the Thamalakane River, exclusively for Gap Medics students and complete with private swimming pool. You’ll live together with other aspiring healthcare students from the UK, US and Australia, as well as our local staff team who give it a real family feel and help you make friends you’ll keep for years to come.

Being literally on the edge of the Okavango Delta really means one thing: safari! The Delta is a flooded wildlife haven that is best explored from the comfort(ish) of a traditional dug-out canoe called a Mokoro, poled along by your local guide for stunning up close views of wild elephants, giraffe, hippo, zebra and even lions (it’s OK, the guides know their stuff…).

Join in – this December 17th!

This special project is available on a first-come first-served basis to a limited number of students for one- or two-week placements starting on 17th December 2017.
