The science of birth is fascinating, but there is nationwide shortage of midwives and spaces at university to train them. Knowing this, the process of applying for a midwifery degree can feel daunting, especially if you are considering a change of degree or career. How do you know if midwifery is the right career path for you, and how can you impress university admissions once you decide?
At Gap Medics, we know that a global education can make all the difference to a student’s development, both as an individual and an applicant (just ask any of our 8,000+ program alumni). Whether you seek insight for your midwifery interviews or confidence in your career choice, our university work experience program will place you right in the heart of an international hospital or clinic to observe real midwives at work – with real mothers and newborns.
Our midwifery program is open all year, and you can attend for as many weeks as you like (we recommend two). Programs begin on Sundays and end on Saturdays, leaving ample time for you to arrive at and depart from your destination.
“I’d like to begin by saying that my Gap Medics placement was utterly unforgettable and invaluable to opening my eyes to the world of midwifery.
“While at the hospital, the dedicated midwives and obstetricians I shadowed every opportunity to teach me about caring for women and their babies. I felt completely at home at the hospital and comfortable asking questions. I also felt like my mentors really cared about how my learning was progressing and they even quizzed us to keep us on our toes!
“Gap Medics was even more amazing than I imagined. It was an absolute privilege to witness so many new lives coming into the world. I would do it again in a heartbeat!”
Croatia has a universal healthcare system with top-notch facilities, state-of-the-art equipment, and highly trained specialists. Croatians often suffer from the cardiovascular, metabolic, and degenerative diseases commonly encountered in the Western world, and these are important considerations for Croatian healthcare providers working in birth medicine.
The modern technology available in Croatia contributes to its reputation as one of our top destinations for students hoping to shadow in clinical environments similar to those in Australia.
The Dominican Republic has one of the best healthcare systems in the Caribbean and is graced with a year-round tropical climate. Unfortunately, the warm weather also comes with a high incidence of mosquito-borne illnesses, like dengue and malaria. Accordingly, healthcare providers in the Dominican Republic pay particular attention to these diseases when it comes to expectant mothers and newborns.
In addition to our midwifery program in Santo Domingo, we offer a community health project facilitated by our non-profit partner hospital. You can devote a week or more of your program to helping underserved Haitian communities in the Dominican Republic.
You will be placed in a Gap Medics partner hospital or clinic the Monday after your arrival, and you will spend weekdays shadowing your dedicated mentor in healthcare. We partner with hospitals around the world that offer busy maternity wards for our students to explore. Our partner hospitals undergo a rigorous vetting process before they are able to host our students, ensuring an unbeatable standard of quality when it comes to the educational value and academic rigour of our program.
Your department mentor will be a professional nurse or midwife working in birth medicine. They will help you get the most from your experience by providing clear guidance and supervision as you learn to break down barriers in the patient wards and observe everything from Caesarean sections to antenatal care. We work very closely with our partner hospitals to ensure that our mentors are fully qualified and understand the educational aims of our program.
You will also attend global health tutorials throughout your placement. Our hospital mentors host these informal sessions at the Gap Medics house, focussing on the local cultural, social, and economic factors that will help you understand and interpret what you see in the hospital each day.
Nurse Rungchay has been working at our 870-bed partner hospital in Phitsanulok, Thailand for over 10 years.
A popular mentor among students, shadowing Nurse Rungchay will give you extensive insight into the daily procedures and goings-on in a busy obstetrics and gynaecology department. A typical day with Nurse Rungchay could see you learn anything from how to prepare someone for labour to the best way to complete an obstetrical examination. Nurse Rungchay is also responsible for arranging family planning sessions for parents - an activity that would be completely beneficial for you to sit in on and learn from.
We believe that all members of our staff have a responsibility to protect and care for our students, and our greatest pride is the relaxed family environment that we create to help foster your education and exploration. In addition to chefs, housekeepers, night managers, and security teams, Gap Medics houses also employ dedicated placement coordinators to help support and guide you throughout your midwifery program.
Your placement coordinators will brief you at the Gap Medics house, accompany you to the hospital, and introduce you to your mentors. As experts on our destinations and offerings, these friendly individuals also love to advise our students on local travel opportunities and facilitate exciting and inclusive on-site activities – so if you fancy a game of volleyball, a traditional barbecue, or a table-football tournament, they will have you covered.
