Jesseca completed a midwifery placement at Morogoro Regional Hospital.
“In January 2015 at the age of sixteen, I spent two weeks undertaking a work experience placement in the obstetrics and gynaecology wards at Morogoro Regional Hospital. To say this experience was amazing would be the biggest understatement of the century!
My first day at the hospital was truly unforgettable. Although confronting at times, there was no better feeling then seeing a mother’s face the first time they saw their baby. It didn’t matter if it was their first or third child, the amount of love and adoration brought me to tears.
The most surreal feeling for me was the first time that I shadowed a doctor in a C-section and how a room that was previously filled with five people suddenly became six!
As my placement went on, I began to learn how to weigh, wrap and even perform APGAR tests on babies. This is something I did almost everyday. Sometimes I even got the chance to have a sneaky cuddle or two with the babies before handing them back to mum!
My Gap Medics experience changed me and confirmed my ambitions to be a midwife.
I can’t thank everyone enough—the Gap Medics staff and my parents in particular—for making this unforgettable trip possible.”
