The United States has a proud history of producing highly qualified, competent and professional doctors and medical professionals. Medical schools in the United States are among some of the best in the world, and students from all across the globe travel to America to undertake medical training. Because of the high regard of United States’ medical schools, competition is high and getting into the top medical school can be extremely difficult. Unlike some other nations, many medical schools in the United States require undergraduates to have completed either a degree or at least three years of pre-med school education at university level, and even then, getting into some of the top schools is exceptionally difficult.

Medical education in the United States is rigorous and highly sought after. There are 159 medical schools across the country, 133 of which award MD degrees (Doctor of Medicine) and 29 award DO degrees (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine). Both types of degree provide the same level of qualification to practice medicine both in the United States and abroad. Each year, over half-a-million students apply to medical schools in the United States, while the number of places available is less than 60,000, making medicine the most competitive courses in American education. On average, each medical school student applies to 14 different medical schools and each school receives on average over 4,000 applications–higher among the most sought after institutions.

Harvard Medical School remains the top destination for most medical students. Harvard has a long history of providing quality medical school education, is deemed the number one medical school in the United States, and is amongst the best medical schools in the world. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Harvard is home to over 600 hundred medical school students, many of whom have come from abroad to study. John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, is also thought of as one of the best medical schools in the United States, and houses just over 400 medical school students. Other notable medical schools include the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine and the Stanford University School of Medicine.

These top universities have the lowest acceptance rates of any universities in the United States, with less than 4 % of applicants successfully getting a place. Some medical schools in the United States have much higher intakes and, therefore, have much higher acceptance rates. The nation’s largest medical school in the terms of student numbers is the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. However, despite having over a thousand medical school places, more than 12,000 applications are made to Drexel each year, which still makes places still highly sought after. Because of the competitive nature and high regard of United States’ medical schools, gaining a place often rewards students with a degree that is highly venerated abroad, with graduates from United States’ medical schools highly respected in other countries.
