Stanford School of MedicineThis is a top-tier, research-intensive medical school. It works towards improving health via collaborative discoveries, leadership as well as innovation in education, research and patient care.

Stanford Hospital & Clinics This segment has consistently been highly ranked as one of the country’s topmost hospitals for advanced care in areas such as cardiac care, cancer treatment, orthopedic surgery and neurology as well as organ transplantation.

Lucile Packard Children’s HospitalThis hospital is recognized across the world for advancing family centered care for expectant mothers and children.

The Medical Center is strategically located on Stanford University’s main campus. It is adjacent to top ranked programs in physical and biological sciences, engineering, ethics, computer science and several other disciplines. This proximity, in addition to the University’s collaboration-encouraging tradition, fosters multi-disciplinary research. This adds impetus to the effort of translating new knowledge into novel methods of disease diagnosis and prevention.

 

Medical School Overview 

Stanford Medical School has an October 15th application deadline and the application fee is $85. Full-time tuition is $47,343. SMS also has 891 full-time, as well as part-time faculty. For the School’s class of 2012, 70.7% of graduates who applied to various residency programs got admission to their first choice.

SMS is situated in Silicon Valley, California, between San Jose and San Francisco. In place of the traditional, medical school interview process, candidates at the school are required to complete ten, 8-minute interviews, that have a few in-between breaks. For students who have been accepted to the SMS M.D. program, the curriculum is a unique one. Stanford’s Scholarly Concentrations program helps its students get concentrated education in their elected areas such as clinical research and bioengineering. This is in addition to a core sciences education.

Clinical experience can be acquired at the Stanford Medical Center, which is situated nearby. This includes Stanford Hospital and Clinics as well as the centers various partner facilities. Student research is encouraged by facilities such as its 140 school centers and programs. There are around 40 student organizations that students can opt to join, such as PALS, SWEAT and the Pediatric Chronic Disease Mentorship Program.

Medical students can also complete various concurrent degrees, such as an M.D./PhD. in areas such as biomedical informatics and bioengineering, an M.D./M.B.A. via  the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and an M.D./M.P.H in alliance with UC—Berkeley’s School of Public Health. SMS also offers master’s degree programs such as epidemiology, biomedical informatics, genetic counseling and human genetics.
