Did you know that people who make New Year’s resolutions are ten times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t? If that’s not a great excuse to start jotting down your hopes and dreams, we don’t know what is. Today we’re sharing some handy tips for making the most of the season, and planning effective resolutions for the year ahead. If you’re dreaming about doing an internship with Gap Medics in 2016, there might just be something here to help you get there!

1. Ask yourself questions

Start by asking yourself what you want the year ahead to look like. Do you want to travel? Learn to cook? Start university? Recycle more? Make time for hobbies? Building this mental picture will provide guidance and clarity when it comes to making resolutions.

2. Write them down!

Research has shown that you’re 70% more likely to stick to a resolution if you write it down. Why not keep a page at the back of your diary or a document on your computer desktop? Or make a resolutions mood board filled with magazine clippings? Make it accessible so you don’t forget about it!

3. Make a plan

Be specific about your goals and how you want to achieve them. If you want to travel more, think about where to, who with and when – and make a plan about how you’ll pay for your trip. 4. Focus on the ‘why?’

Always keep the bigger picture in mind. Think about why you want to achieve each resolution – what impact will it have on your life? If doing a placement with Gap Medics is on your list, focus on the great benefits that the experience will give you; like bringing focus to your career aspirations, and strengthening your med-school applications.

5. Be realistic

Reach for the stars, but be realistic about what you can do. It’s better to be modest about your goals and surpass your expectations, than be overly ambitious and feel like you’ve stretched yourself too thin. One way to do this is to focus on just a few – really specific – goals, rather than lots of ambiguous ones.
