If you’re aged 16 or 17, with aspirations for a career in medicine, nursing or midwifery, then this program is for you. You can join individually or with friends to share an incredible one- or two-week adventure observing the work of health professionals in one of Botswana’s busiest hospitals with other students from around the world.
The trip is tailored specifically for high school students, with professional supervision in and out of the hospital, global health tutorials and an awesome social experience living in our own private safari lodge in the heart of wildlife country! It’s a great way to increase your understanding of possible future career paths in an exciting and unfamiliar environment and culture, and helps set you apart from the crowd on a pre-med or pre-health application.
This special one-off project is available to a limited number of students from across the globe on a first come, first served basis, to celebrate the expansion of our hugely successful Africa program. The dates take advantage of your holidays, with either a one-week placement that gets you home for Christmas Eve with family, or a two-week placement to experience an African Christmas!
The heart of our program is your placement in the hospital itself. It’s all about being fully immersed in the clinical environment, and from day one you’ll be in your scrubs shadowing the doctor, nurse or midwife who will be your personal mentor for the week. You’ll be on the wards, in the operating room, emergency room, delivery suite or outpatient clinics – wherever the needs of patients take your mentor, you’ll follow.
The department(s) you experience will depend on your preferences and availability at the time, with opportunities in pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, infectious diseases and E.R.
If you’re an aspiring nurse midwife, the busy maternity unit offers an amazing opportunity to observe deliveries first hand (by natural birth and Caesarean section), as well as the antenatal and postnatal wards.
We’ll get you as close as safely possible to the front line, in a purely observational capacity, fully consistent with medical ethics in the United States.
After a busy shift in the hospital, you get to hang out at our safari lodge, exclusive to Gap Medics students and fully supported by our ever-smiling local staff team who are on hand 24 hours a day for your safety and comfort. With a private swimming pool, host of free-time activities and even a full-time chef, your home from home on the banks of an African river won’t disappoint!
There is one reason most people go to this part of Botswana… Safari! The Okavango Delta is a world-famous flooded wildlife haven, just a few miles from our lodge, and it’s best explored from a traditional dug-out canoe called a Mokoro. Guided and kept safe by your local guide, you’ll get up close to wild elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos, buffalo and even lion, all in their natural environment.
This special project is available on a first-come first-served basis to a limited number of students for one- or two-week placements starting on 17th December 2017.
