Hospital Experience In Dominican Republic
Our Caribbean program offers the most varied experience of clinical medicine and surgery, and is convenient for even a one-week placement with direct flights from airports across the US. Being on Atlantic Standard Time also makes it easy to stay in touch with family back home.
Experiencing the way healthcare is delivered in the often challenging conditions of a less developed country provides a fascinating insight into global healthcare, and it’s an ideal place to gain a safe introduction to tropical medicine.
We work with two major public hospitals, both providing a wide range of services in departments that include Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Maternity, Gynecology, General Surgery and Emergency Room. Facilities in these public hospitals are basic and funding is often extremely limited (one of the great benefits of our partnerships is the extra funding our program gives to the hospitals), which makes this a fascinating place to see first hand just what an incredible job dedicated doctors and nurses can do in challenging circumstances.
At certain times of year, we also host Community Healthcare placements on our Dominican program, giving students the chance to travel out to “batays” (villages that house workers on the sugar plantations, often with very limited access to healthcare) with medical teams and public health workers.
Our Caribbean House
Our permanent base in the Dominican Republic is the truly spectacular Gap Medics House just outside La Romana on the south coast, set around our tropical garden and huge swimming pool (all exclusively for Gap Medics students).
To one side of the pool, the main house comprises a largely open-plan ground floor with dining area, relaxed living space and a large social kitchen. The upper floor and the second building, to the other side of the pool, house the large airy bedrooms shared between four or five students, each with a private bathroom and all fully air conditioned.
As with all Gap Medics houses, we recruit, train and manage our own full-time team of helpful and enthusiastic local people – including a chef, housekeeper, groundskeeper, student coordinators and female supervisor on duty overnight. For added peace of mind, we have security guards on the gate 24 hours a day to ensure that only authorised Gap Medics students and staff have access to the property.
Your free time in
Covering more than half of one of the largest islands in the Caribbean, Dominican Republic is a beach-lover’s dream! A short boat ride off the south coast, where we are based, the islands of Saona and Catalina are ringed by truly spectacular white sand beaches and warm, shallow turquoise waters. An easy afternoon trip from the house, these are popular after placement during the week.
Across the island on the north coast, Cabarete is world-famous for its near-perfect kite surfing conditions and has a vibrant social scene. It makes a great weekend trip, with lots of accommodation for all budgets along the beach, and dozens of kite surfing schools offering introductory courses and equipment hire.
Further inland, there are jungle covered mountains to explore, adventure activities from zip lining to kayaking to quad biking, and of course the wonderfully laid back and welcoming Caribbean culture.
