Hospital Experience In Croatia
Our Europe midwifery placements are hosted by the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the largest and most important hospital in the Croatia’s northern Istria region, near the border with Italy.
This program is a great way to gain a first insight into the work of midwives and maternity doctors with the excitement of a foreign culture but the relative familiarity of a “Western” setting. Maternity units in Europe are structured slightly differently to their equivalents in the United States, so in order to get the most relevant experience you may be mentored by a midwife, maternity nurse, or medical doctor specialising in obstetrics.
Hosting up to 35 students at a time, Croatia is our smallest program, giving it a more intimate, family feel. This is also an integrated program, offering the chance to mix with pre-health college students undertaking their own shadowing experience.
Our Croatian Villa
Your home with us in Croatia is our spectacular modern villa set on a hill just 15 minutes’ walk from the town centre. Even closer is the imposing Roman amphitheatre, built 2,000 years ago to host gladiator battles (and in more recent times, hosting the opening night of Pula’s famous Outlook music festival!).
Outside, our two private swimming pools and garden shaded by native olive trees provide the perfect places to relax after a busy shift in the hospital or soak up the Croatian summer sunshine.
The upper floor of the house is a large open living space, with a communal dining area, open-air terrace, and open-plan kitchen. This is the social hub of the house, and also provides a cosy retreat for students joining us during the European winter. To top it off, we have our own spa room downstairs, complete with sauna and heated spa pool!
Bedrooms are spread between the main house and a separate apartment within the garden, sleeping 4-8 students per room and no more than five sharing a bathroom. Bedrooms are all single-sex, and 16/16 year olds have separate sleeping areas to over 18s.
Your free time
Pula is a popular tourist destination in the heart of Europe. The town itself is a fantastically welcoming place and the historic narrow streets crammed with local gelato parlours and authentic pizzerias (the region was once part of Italy) are safe to walk around day and night.
The coast is a short taxi ride from the house, with its secluded beaches, beautiful pine forests and abundant opportunities for the must-try activity of cliff-jumping into the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea! For those who prefer to start their encounter with the water a little closer to its surface, this area has some of the best scuba diving sites in Europe.
With its compact geography and fantastic transport systems, Europe is a travelers’ dream. Popular weekends within easy reach include Venice (there’s a summer ferry service direct from Pula), the dramatic natural beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park, and in winter the ski resorts of Slovenia a couple of hours over the border.
Whether you want to go off exploring at weekends or make full use of our amazing house, our local staff team under the lead of Regional Director Jerry are always on hand to help!
