We know the reasons you may want to go on a shadowing internship program with us might be different from the next student. Whatever your motivation or area of interest — medicine, nursing, dentistry, midwifery or physician assistant (PA) studies—we have you covered. Find out how we have changed the lives of some of our past students.
Alex completed a split medicine and community health placement in our busy hospitals of Santo Domingo.
My trip to the Dominican Republic was one of a lifetime. Gap Medics provided me with a truly unforgettable experience filled with plenty of great memories and opportunities that I will soon be able to use in my journey to become an Emergency Physician.
Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Community Health were my placements but it was not the specialty of medicine that made my trip unforgettable, it was the mentors. Each department had physician mentors who made sure my placement was fun and educational. My mentors taught me their specialty by allowing me to observe multiple surgeries or procedures, sometimes even allowing me to help assist them with assessing the patient.
The big and beautiful Gap Medics house was filled with accommodations to make my stay comfortable and relaxing. Every meal was prepared fresh with a variety of different options for everyone. Every Thursday we would have a big cookout by the pool, which would usually turn into a pool party by the end of the night.
One of my favorite parts of my whole trip was visiting the special needed kids at the orphanage. This humbling experience allowed us to bring food and supplies to the local orphanage and play with the kids. The level of enjoyment they received from our visits, and the looks on their faces when we played with them or helped feed them dinner made it the most rewarding part of my whole trip.
I would recommend Gap Medics to any student thinking of a career in healthcare. This internship was much more than a way to strengthen my medical school application. It was a once and a lifetime opportunity that not only allowed me to receive real medical experience, but gave me a brand new outlook on a career in medicine. I was able to network and connect with brilliant doctors who are eager to help me in any way possible throughout my application process and career. I even made friends from all over the world that I continue to keep in touch with daily!
