Find out how we have changed the lives of some of our past students.
Rachel completed a pre-medical program at MSW Central Clinic Hospital.
“A friend of mine recommended that I go abroad with Gap Medics to help develop my understanding of global healthcare. So after some extensive research, I decided on Warsaw, Poland as my destination.
I don’t regret my choice at all as during my time in Europe I gained invaluable medical experience observing mentors working in the cardiac surgery, obstetrics, gynecology and gastric surgery departments at MSW Central Clinic Hospital.
While in the cardiac surgery department, I was able to go into the operating room and observe the action up close. In some cases, I was just inches away from open chest cavities! My mentors were great and walked me through the surgeries step-by-step. They were also more than willing to answer my questions.
My second week on hospital program was in the obstetrics and gynecology department where I observed everything from C-sections to ultrasounds. One of the most unforgettable experiences of this department was witnessing a stillbirth. This experience taught me about the importance of respecting the privacy of the mother and father and allowing them to mourn in peace. It also helped me learn about the psychological side of medicine.
The hospital aside, I loved exploring Warsaw. The weekends consisted of immersing myself in Polish culture, such as eating perogies, going on bike tours of the city and climbing to the top of the Palace of Culture and Science. I came to learn that a large majority of Polish people speak English, so I didn’t have trouble getting around the city.
I would recommend a Gap Medics shadowing internship in Warsaw to anyone interested in medicine.”
