Find out how we have changed the lives of some of our past students.
Audrey completed a pre-medical program at Iringa Regional Hospital.
“I signed up for Gap Medics because I was hoping to get an experience I wouldn’t have been able to receive at home in the US. I definitely wasn’t disappointed.
I loved my time at the hospital in Iringa. My mentors were knowledgeable, intelligent, resourceful and great about involving me in hospital life. I got to see a ton of really cool procedures from up-close and gained a practical understanding of the complexities of diagnosing and treating patients.
I had some fascinating conversations about the social elements involving medicine in Tanzania with my mentors. Moreover, as I was doing dengue research at my university at home, the global health tutorial on Tanzanian diseases was especially interesting.
When I wasn’t at the hospital, I was well looked after. I can’t say enough good things about the house and staff members. The accommodation was really cozy, and the environment was so sociable it felt a little like we were a family.
Our program manager was incredible—flexible around all the things we wanted to do while in the country and excellent at handling any issues that arose. By the end of my trip, I was really sad to leave everyone!
If you have the opportunity to go on a Gap Medics placement, do it! It really helped put me on the right track for applying for medical school. You won’t regret it!”
