Kaylee completed a weeks nursing placement in our busy partner hospital in Santo Domingo
When I first stepped off the plane in Santo Domingo, I had no idea the week to follow would be completely life changing thanks to Gap Medics! My story with Gap Medics starts off a bit rocky with a delayed flight and missing my connection. I was freaking out, but after speaking with Gap Medics, I felt very reassured and all my anxiety about arriving late was taken away. By the end of my week in the Dominican, I almost forgot that whole little mishap even happened.
So what was my week in the Dominican like and why was it so life changing? For me, it was more than one thing that made my week so special. From the amazing staff serving us to the opportunities to observe so much in the hospital to our global health tutorial talks by a local doctor…the list goes on. For me personally, the first day I arrived at my hospital placement I was super nervous, but my eyes were opened wide that day to realize how different healthcare is in other countries and how ignorant I have been to that fact my whole life. Every day in the hospital, I got to see something different and learn so much just from observing. My nurse, Lillian whom I shadowed was the best and I am so thankful to have had such an awesome mentor. The opportunities you get with Gap Medics to see so many medical scenarios such as birth, surgery, and more is what I loved so much about the program. It’s hard to get these types of first hand experiences back home.
For example, on my second day of placement I got to witness my first birth ever and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I have been very interested in being a Labor and Delivery nurse for a while now and finally seeing a birth confirmed for me that Labor and Delivery is the place for me. Being able to experience that intimate moment between mother and baby is so special and I am so thankful Gap Medics gave me the opportunity to see this. If I hadn’t have gone to the Dominican, who knows when I would have finally gotten to see a birth.
On top of the incredible medical opportunities I got while abroad, I was so impressed with the rest of the program, too. The house we stayed in was very nice and all the Gap Medics staff were the most amazing, fun, and caring people. I really enjoyed getting to know the other students from all around the world and being able to bond over our common love of medicine and adventure. Getting to know some of the students really well and hear their stories was really important to me and impacted how I plan to go forward with my life.
I can’t say enough how much I love the Gap Medics program!!! I honestly didn’t know much about Gap Medics until I began researching the program online. In the end I chose this program because of a friend who spoke very highly of her experience with the program. I am so thankful that my friend Hannah recommended the program to me. Although I only got to spend 1 week abroad, that 1 week changed me as a person and changed my view of the world. Thank you Gap Medics so, so much!!!
