Tina Monteleone from Melbourne joined friends on the Gap Medics program out in Tanzania; they had an amazing time and wanted to share their experiences with other Australian students who are thinking about joining Gap Medics and applying to medical school.

“When I made the decision to take a Gap year following year 12, I decided it would be a great time to get some more work experience in medicine. I had previously spent some time shadowing the nurses in the local county hospital, but I was keen for something much more involving.”

“As many Australian prospective medical students would know, it’s very difficult to get a real sense of life in a medical field in Australia, due to the limited number of work experience placements available.”

“When I first saw the GapMedics program on the internet I was a little dubious about the validity and the quality of the program, it all seemed too good to be true; a real experience in diverse areas of medicine, with other gap year students, in some of the most marvelous locations in the world….however I made some enquiries, got in touch with past aussie students and contacted the staff at GapMedics, who were most helpful, and then I decided to take the plunge- 1 month in Tanzania!”

“Personally, I believe an experience such as this is the most valuable undertaking possible for any prospective student. The GapMedics staff supported us wonderfully through any concerns we had whilst on placement and the delightful hospital staff were most welcoming and treated us as an important part of the hospital team.”

“They keenly encouraged our involvement in all aspects of hospital life. Not only did I get real experience in ward rounds, observing surgery, note taking for doctors, daily consultations and patient care, the experience highlighted other facets of medicine that a prospective student must be capable of such as professional communication and inter-disciplinary team work.”

“My time in Tanzania wasn’t all work related, we indulged in the local cuisine thanks to our superb chef, got together for weekly BBQ’s, joined in soccer matches with the local kids, soaked up the local lifestyle and took a weekend safari. The bonds created by this shared experience has formed lifetime friendships!”

“The real life experience offered by the GapMedics program is unlike any other opportunity available. Not only did I have an unbelievable time in Tanzania, the whole experience crystalised my aspiration to pursue my studies in medicine!”

Thanks Gap Medics!
