London Medical Schools

Being the capital, London has more medical schools than any other city in the UK. Furthermore, London’s medical schools are also some of the most highly regarded in the world, but that also means they are some of the  most difficult medical schools in the country to get into. London has five main medical schools of higher education, three schools of dentistry and several schools of associated clinical academic disciplines. Together, these schools from the London Medicine group.

Medical schools

The five main medical schools in London are:

King’s College London School of Medicine and Dentistry is one of the most prestigious in the UK. The school’s campuses are based in three top London hospitals: Guy’s Hospital, King’s College Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital.King’s College is the largest medical school in all of Europe and has 335 places on its Bachukelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree programmes.

Imperial College School of Medicine is also highly prestigious and was formed in 1997 after a merger of several existing historic medical schools. Each year, it accepts 286 medical undergraduates, but entry requirements are very high.

Barts, The London School of Medicine and Dentistry is the medical school of the Queen Mary, University of London. Its campuses are based in the world famous St Bartholomew’s Hospital (Barts) and the Royal London Hospital. It takes 277 British undergraduates each year and 17 from overseas.

UCL Medical School of the University College London is primarily based at the University College Hospital, but students also study at some of the most prestigious clinical sites in the UK, including the famous children’s hospital, Great Ormond Street. UCL is widely regarded as one of the best medical schools in the UK. Each year it accepts 330 undergraduates.

St George’s, University of London, dates back to 1733, making it one of the oldest medical schools in the world. It currently accepts 100 graduates, 175 undergraduates and 10 overseas students each year.

Dental schools

Along with Barts, The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and King’s College London School of Medicine and Dentistry, London also has one other highly regarded school of dentistry.

UCL Eastman Dental Institute is associated to the University of Central London and students often study at the nearby Eastman Dental Hospital. The institute is the largest of its kind in Europe and is a world famous research institute, known for its continuing professional development courses, which are attended by dental practitioners from all over the globe.

London also has several other medical institutes that specialise in certain fields, including:

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is part of the University of London and is a leading postgraduate school that concentrates on improving worldwide health by studying tropical diseases and national and international public health issues.

The Institute of Cancer Research is a postgraduate college of the University of London and is one of the leading cancer research institutes in the world. It offers MPhil and PhD degrees and is renowned across the globe for its research into treatments for cancer.
