For a lot of people, Surgery can seem like the most exciting part of becoming a doctor. It is fast-paced work that can involve life-threatening situations. Doctors are required to pay extraordinarily close attention to detail and possess endless skills to carry out procedures – these can either be planned, or emergency situations that can crop up at any time!

If you are an aspiring doctor, you are probably aware that the beginning of your university life will consist of a great deal of theoretical training; this is in preparation for your clinical training later on in your studies. As a result of this, it is difficult to dive right into the real guts of medicine and prepare yourself the demanding career ahead of you at this stage.

In surgeryThis is why we believe Surgery Work Experience is important – to really give you an insight into the depths of medicine and let you determine if this is definitely what you want to do. It is also a great way to help you decide if this is an area of medicine you may wish to specialise in later on.

You will certainly not want to be thrown in at the deep end of Surgery and realise that amputating somebody’s leg, or removing a tumour from a person’s body is something that you just cannot face – it is all part of being a doctor! It is great to have the first-hand experience of observing situations like this so you know how it is going to feel when you are in that situation yourself.

You can obtain Surgery Work Experience in your local hospital, yet if you are searching for a well-rounded and more interesting experience, we advise that you travel abroad. Lesser-developed countries offer a wider variety of healthcare issues, facilities are sometimes not as advanced as they would hope, and sometimes they could really just do with that extra pair of hands to help them along. It will really test your passion for your chosen career and give you something unique and exciting to discuss at medical school interviews.
