The University College London Medical School is the medical school of the University College of London and is situated in London, UK. The UCL has been offering education in medicine since the year 1834, when it was known as the Royal Free & University College Medical School. Today, it stands at 4th rank in the United Kingdom as per the 2014 Guardian University Guide and the 2014 Complete University Guide. 

The Medical School is totally committed to the undergraduate and postgraduate courses it offers and is a frontrunner in the research and teaching fields. The school has very distinguished academic staff who is at the fore of extensive international-research in the biomedical sciences, clinical medicine and medical education. It is one of the largest medical schools’ in the country and has an annual intake of 330 undergraduate-students for the MBBS Programme. It also has the most expansive range of B.Sc. opportunities in the country. 

The college operates out of 3 central clinical campuses.

  • Bloomsbury campus – The main clinical facilities of this campus are at the University College Hospital. This sixteen-storey building has excellent health-care facilities and is considered to be an important centre of global importance for clinical research and teaching. 
  • The Royal Free campus– This is located in Hampstead and houses the Royal Free Hospital. 
  • The Whittington campus– This is located in Archway and houses the newly renovated Whittington Hospital. The Whittington campus is slated to be one of the first Integrated Care Organisations in the country. 

Clinical teaching is also conducted at various other high profile Foundation Trusts, District General Hospitals, Associated University Hospitals and at numerous community and general practice settings. Students who join the University College London Medical School enjoy the advantages of being members of a world-class medical institution and have numerous opportunities for exciting Special Study and specialized clinical attachments.

On completing the undergraduate course, students will receive their MBBS degree. This is a primary medical qualification (PMQ). Students who have earned this degree are entitled to conditional registration with the country’s General Medical Council. 

 

Foundation Year 1

Provisionally, a registered doctor can only practice in an approved Foundation Year 1 post and no other kind of work can be undertaken, as per the current law. To gain the Foundation Year 1 post the student is required to apply whilst he/she is in the final year of their undergraduate course via the United Kingdom Foundation Programme Office scheme. This selection scheme allocates posts to the graduates on a very competitive basis. 

This Foundation Programme spans two-years and is a generic training programme that is designed for graduates from the medical school. It is the bridge between medical school and any General/Specialty Practice training. Students who complete this foundation course successfully, receive a Certificate of Experience. 

Students who have earned this certificate are eligible to apply for full-registration with the Council. All regulations have to be checked on the university website http://www.ucl.ac.uk as updates come in from time to time. 

 

Graduate Programme

The University College London Medical School runs the Skills Development Program as part of its graduate program. Students can opt for different Skills Development Courses such as:

  • Postgraduate Diplomas/Postgraduate Certificates/ Master’s (MSc, MA, MRes) programmes at UCL.
  • Research degrees
  • EngD, MPhil/PhD, MPhil Stud MD(Res) and professional doctorates courses at UCL
  • Spending a short time at UCL (this is for students from other colleges)
  • Visiting students’ research degrees
