A Safari Escape to the Serengeti

Students on safari in Tanzania! The Great Migration is a natural phenomenon that is well known all over the world. Home to this Great Migration is the Serengeti National Park in Africa. This is Africa’s most well known Park. It gets its name from the Maasai word ‘Serengeti’, which means vast endless grass plains. Spread out over 30,000 kilometres and famous for an unbelievable variety of predators in addition to the two million strong wildebeest ‘Great Migration’, the Serengeti guarantees an incomparable experience.

The beauty of this place is that you will always see game no matter which time of the year you visit. There is no off-season to visit the park. Even after you take away the animals, you will still be left with some of the largest grazing lands in the continent and amazing tribes.

Game You Can See At The Park

If you are hoping to see the Big Five, this is the best place to look out for them. Serengeti boasts over 3000 lions, a huge number of buffalo, mongoose, giraffe, two million wildebeest, countless zebra, leopard, hyena, elephant, crocodile, jackal, porcupine, gazelle and a number of other species. There are also over 500 species of bird which have been recorded in the Park so this is another aspect to watch out for.

Best Time to Visit

As we said earlier, Serengeti does not have an off season for viewing game. You will be able to see different kinds of game all year round. The peak season however, is from January to March when the Great migration can be seen calving. The park is also very popular from July till November because the herds can be spotted crossing the Mara River at this time so there are a lot of great sightings near the river. During the months of April and May, there are usually fewer tourists and the place is a lot quieter. You will have to contend with the rain during these months but the rainy season in the Serengeti offers its own charm.

Best Places to Stay

For the very adventurous, the safari camps can be the best way to see the park. Here, you camp in tents and you are taken along with the herds so these are often the best options to see great game. For those who want to live in a bit of luxury, a number of great hotels like Sasakwa, Sabora, FaruFaru and Singita Mara tented Camp are also available, though these can be a pinch on a student’s pocket, especially during the peak tourist seasons. However, if you are going specifically to sight good game, remember that the location of your stay is very important. Since the park is so big, if you stay on the wrong end of the park, you may be very unlucky with your sightings.

Activities Available

Since the main attraction of Serengeti is the fabulous safari, a number of safari experiences are offered by the different hotels. Night driving and walking are not allowed in the park. The only place which allows you to walk inside the park is Alex Walker’s Serian. However, a number of lodges have made provisions for night drives in the reserves along the Serengeti and for walks on the reserves too.
