They work in various settings from hospitals and private practices to out-patient clinics, specialty clinics and schools. NPs are qualified to work in a wide range of medical fields and there are nurse practitioner programmes available in almost every specialty. Take a look at some of the specialty areas that you can choose from when you are ready to take your career to the next level from registered nursing.

 

 

  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

Neonatal Nurse Practitioners care for preterm and full term infants who have critical illnesses. In addition to caring for ill infants, they also work with and educate parents during this challenging time. In this role you may work independently or as part of a health care team to ensure your patients receive the best care possible.

  • Paediatric Nurse Practitioner

These specialists provide primary care for newborns, infants, children and teenagers till they are 18 years of age. They educate parents on how to prevent childhood diseases and illnesses and advice children and teens on making healthy choices.

  • Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner

A Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner specialises in women’s health issues and preventative care. Their primary focus is on women’s reproductive and gynaecological needs. They also provide women’s prenatal and postpartum care.

  • School Nurse Practitioners

School Nurse Practitioners care for students in colleges and universities. They focus on preventative medicine and also manage minor illnesses and disease and educate students on healthy life-style choices.

  • Adult Nurse Practitioner

An adult nurse practitioner provides care for all individuals from 18 years of age up through adulthood and old age. Their focus is on preventative care and management of chronic illnesses and diseases. They also educate patients and family members on healthy lifestyle choices.

  • Family Nurse Practitioner

Family nurse practitioners provide primary care for individuals of all ages across the lifespan; from maternal-newborn patients, infants, children and adults. They perform well check-ups with a strong focus on preventative medicine.

  • Emergency Nurse Practitioners

Emergency nurse practitioners undergo highly specialised training that enables them to take care of patients with acute illnesses, urgent primary care needs, and minor injuries in the emergency room.

  • Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

These specialists provide psychiatric care for patients of all ages. They diagnose, treat and prescribe medications for patients with mental health problems and provide therapy for patients who are depressed, experiencing anxiety and have suicidal thoughts.

  • Oncology Nurse Practitioners

Oncology nurse practitioners specialise in providing care for patients with cancer and hematologic diseases. They work in oncology units in hospitals, cancer and specialty clinics where they address psychological as well as physical issues that patients and their families experience during this time in their lives.

  • Geriatric Nurse Practitioners

Nephrology Nurse Practitioners work with patients who have chronic and end stage renal disease. They may work in dialysis out-patient clinics and in nephrology units in hospitals.

You will have to obtain a Masters Degree or a PhD in Nursing in order to work as a nurse practitioner in any specialty.
