My Gap Medics placement was amazing. The staff were always willing to help and give good advice when it was needed. I felt completely at home with them, and it was the biggest relief after traveling the world alone for the previous 3 and a half months. They became like family for two weeks and it was an absolute pleasure to be able to spend time with them and to learn about their country and culture.
Yes, as long as you are at least 16 years old on the date you travel. If you are under 18 when you apply, we will need consent from your parent or guardian.
Yes. Our placements are designed to give an insight into practical healthcare for students prior to clinical training, so they are also suitable for first year medics, dentists, nurses and midwives.
Yes. We welcome students from anywhere in the world, provided you are able to obtain the appropriate visa for the placement country.
As long as we have space on the programme, you can go whenever you like. Our programmes run all year round, but spaces at our busiest times (especially July and August) usually get booked up many months in advance. To check availability, please contact our UK head office on +44 (0) 191 603 1111.
It’s up to you, but most students go for between two and four weeks. However, our placements are available for one week or longer, with no maximum number of weeks.
No. If you happen to speak fluent Swahili or Thai that’s brilliant, but we imagine you don’t! All of the mentors in our hospitals speak English so you’ll be fine.
Yes. When you book, let us know the name of the friend you are travelling with and we will place you in the same room in our student accommodation (providing that you are of the same gender as all of our rooms are single sex).

No. Students from all over the world travel with us, so including flights as part of our package wouldn’t be practical. We recommend shopping around online to get the best deal on flights. We also have partner travel agents who can recommend flights which will fit in with our arrival and departure times.
Our prices include your hospital work experience placement, global health tutorials, accommodation, food, airport transfer on arrival, local orientation, in-country support, pre-departure support and online trip planner. Our online planner will help you to get everything organised in time for your trip!
You will need to budget for flights, travel insurance, visas (in some destinations only) and personal spending money for socialising, weekend travel, buying souvenirs etc. We’ll give you more information to help you plan how much to bring, and how to carry your money as part of our pre-departure service.
If we cannot provide you with a placement on the dates or in the destination you choose, we will offer you the choice of alternatives or a full refund of the registration fee. Once your placement is confirmed however, the registration fee is not refundable because it is used to hold your place (which could mean turning other students away) and provide all of our pre-departure services.
The registration fee of £290 has to be paid at the time of application to secure your place. The remaining balance is not due until 90 days before the start of your placement.
You should not book any flights until after you have registered and your placement has been confirmed. Your student experience manager will then provide you with the complete arrival and departure windows for your destination.

For Pula, Croatia fly into Pula Airport (PUY).
For Warsaw, Poland fly into Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW).
For Krakow, Poland fly into Krakow Airport (KRK).
For Phitsanulok, Thailand, fly into Phitsanulok Airport (PHS). In the case of Phitsanulok, the cheapest option is often to get your international flight to Bangkok (BKK) then book the domestic connection to Phitsanulok separately (try www.airasia.com or www.nokair.com), or for convenience your travel agent can book you all the way through to Phitsanulok.
Please do not book your flights until after we have confirmed your placement. This is in case we do not have space on the dates when you are hoping to travel. Once your placement has been confirmed, we recommend that you book your flights 2-3 months before you travel.
Firstly, if you want the best deal, shop around. Talk to travel agents, but also look online (www.skyscanner.net can be good). We do have a partner travel agent in the UK who knows our programmes well and gives a great service - just give us a call or email us for details.
Yes. Just as when you go on holiday abroad, you will need personal travel insurance. Ensure that you purchase a policy that will provide you with good cover in the event that you need medical treatment overseas. You also need to make sure that your policy covers you for your hospital placement (which many high street policies do not).
For your convenience, we’ve teamed up with Endsleigh Insurance to offer a policy that provides an excellent level of cover for working in the hospital and general travel too. This policy is available to buy through your My Gap Medics page once your placement is confirmed.
This depends on where you are from and which destination you are going to. If you need a visa for your placement, we’ll give you all the help we can (including supporting documents if required). However, please be aware that the issuing of visas is entirely at the discretion of the country you’re visiting and we have no control over the decision of the visa officials. If you are unsure about your visa requirements, please give us a call to discuss your situation.
We recommend that you consult your family doctor or travel nurse on medication and vaccinations for your trip, as what you require will depend on your medical and travel history. You should do this around two months before your trip.
Once your placement has been confirmed you will have free access to an online travel health information service. This service is run by a London-based charity called InterHealth. You can access this service through your personalised My Gap Medics page. This service will provide you with lots of information about vaccinations. There is also an online store where you can buy malaria medication and first aid kits.
Once your placement has been confirmed, you can access your ‘Preparation Information Pack’ through your My Gap Medics page. This pack will provide you with a suggested packing list for the destination you are travelling to. You can also call or email us anytime if you have any specific questions about what to take with you.
Yes, provided that you book your flights to arrive within our specified arrival windows, one of our own staff will be waiting at the airport to meet you when you land.
Our staff will arrange a transfer back to the airport for you. This transfer is not included in the programme cost. This is because many students choose to go travelling after their placement and it wouldn’t be fair to charge people who wouldn't be accessing the service.
