Special Project

Hospital Work Experience : Africa : December 2017

Placements for Year 12 & 13 students shadowing doctors, nurses or midwives

If you’re a budding medic, nurse or midwife, our hospital work experience placements are designed for you – to give you the chance to shadow doctors and other health professionals going about their duties. The experience can help you make the right decisions about your future career, and give you an insight to set you apart in your UCAS personal statement and in university interviews.

And now, our world-famous Africa programme is back! We’ll take you into the most spectacular safari country on Earth to experience first hand the work of medical staff in one of Botswana’s busiest hospitals… and live in our exclusive safari lodge!

To celebrate the opening of our newest base, we’re offering a limited number of spaces on a special pre-launch project this December, to fit perfectly with UK school holidays, and have you back home for Christmas Eve with your family. Or if an African Christmas takes your fancy, stay the whole two weeks!

Your hospital experience

Gap Medics is all about giving you first hand experience, and from Monday to Friday you’ll be in your scrubs alongside your clinical mentor – the doctor, nurse or midwife who will supervise your week and help you understand all aspects of their work.

Our busy partner hospital in Northern Botswana offers opportunities across a wide range of departments, including paediatrics, orthopaedic and general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynaecology, emergency room and OPD. Once you’ve booked your placement, your Student Experience Manager in our Newcastle Head Office will work with you to place you in the most appropriate setting, and we’ll do our best to accommodate particular interests if you have any.

If you’re an aspiring midwife, the busy maternity unit will give you an incredible insight from ante-natal wards through the delivery process itself and on to postnatal care. You’ll have the chance to observe deliveries first hand, both through natural birth and by Caesarean section.

Your adventure!

Our safe, secure and super fun houses are one of the things that makes Gap Medics unique, and in Botswana we’ve not held back! You’ll stay in our private safari lodge on the bank of the Thamalakane River, exclusively for Gap Medics students and looked after by our ever-smiling local team led by Regional Director Jerry (loved by so many from his years running our programme in Tanzania). With our full-time chef, private swimming pool and a whole list of free-time activities on offer, you definitely won’t get bored outside the hospital.

The highlight of this location – on the edge of the Okavango Delta – is one word: safari! The Okavango is a flooded wildlife haven that is best explored from the comfort(ish) of a traditional dug-out canoe called a Mokoro, poled along by your local guide for stunning up close views of wild elephants, giraffe, hippo, zebra and even lions (it’s OK, the guides know their stuff…).

Get involved – this December 17th!

This special project is available on a first-come first-served basis to a limited number of students for one- or two-week placements starting on 17th December 2017.
