Special Project

First Year Medic Placements : Africa : Summer 2018

Are you a first year medic? Join us this summer to be part of front-line healthcare delivery in one of the most exciting and progressive countries in Africa.

Rwanda has made spectacular strides forward over the past twenty years, overcoming a troubled past to become one of the safest countries on the continent, and an emerging adventure tourist destination – think volcanoes and mountain gorillas to elephants and sandy beaches!

Healthcare services, too, have undergone something of a revolution, from a huge reduction in malaria prevalence resulting from national mosquito net distribution, to a pioneering performance-based funding system for doctors incentivizing effective clinical service delivery.

Your hospital placement – This summer

This brand new programme builds on our experience hosting more than 10,000 student placements to put you on the front line of healthcare delivery, alongside Rwandan doctors in some of the country’s busiest hospitals. The placement is tailored to suit students finishing the first year of medicine in the UK, giving you a chance to apply your foundation of knowledge before you have the full clinical training to undertake an elective-level placement.

You’ll typically spend 4-5 hours a day in the hospital, shadowing your mentor (an experienced local doctor) in all aspects of his or her work, from ward rounds to major surgeries in the operating room, deliveries and C-sections, outpatient clinics and the emergency room. Although primarily an observational experience, our mentors encourage students to take a hands-on role consistent with your level of training (e.g. taking blood pressures, weighing and measuring babies, contributing to case discussions and assisting qualified clinicians).

The house – The fun!

As any Gap Medics student will tell you, our programme is all about balancing a serious clinical placement with the adventure of a lifetime – and this summer in Rwanda will be one of our best yet!

Your home in Rwanda will be the Gap Medics house, a buzzing high-end hostel in the heart of the capital, Kigali, that’s exclusive to our students and brings together the best elements of a hotel, family home and student house. It’s fully catered (by our in-house chef), and provides the perfect place to kick back after placement and start the weekend with a cocktail watching the African sunset from the terrace!

The adventure

Rwanda is one of Africa’s best kept secrets. A small nation separating the jungles of the Congo from the vast savannahs of Tanzania, it’s the perfect introduction to this incredibly continent, especially for those with a sense of adventure.

Nothing is more than a few hours’ drive from our base in Kigali, giving incredible choice for weekend activities. In the north, 4,500m volcanoes that tower into the clouds are most famous as home to wild mountain gorillas. To the west, the beautiful Lake Kivu offers a truly tranquil escape from the bustle of Kigali, with it’s white sand beaches and friendly backpacker lodges. And in the east, elephant, buffalo, and giraffe wander Akagera National Park – easily reached for a weekend safari break!

Get involved…

The Rwanda programme opens on 13th May 2018, and is exclusive to students over the age of 18. Placements are available to first and second year medics, as well as those on track for graduate entry courses.
