Our hospital work experience programme – designed specifically for Year 11, 12 and 13 students – takes you to the front line of clinical medicine and surgery, safely shadowing experienced doctors in their day-to-day work with patients.
As the UK’s leading provider of pre-university healthcare placements, we’ve hosted more than 10,000 students and provide unrivalled student support. Placements are available in exciting locations across Europe, Africa and the Caribbean, giving an invaluable insight into diversity in global healthcare.
A Gap Medics placement will challenge you, that’s the point. From day one, you’ll be in your scrubs alongside your mentor in the wards, consulting rooms, operating theatres or specialist outpatient clinics. What you ultimately gain from that experience will be down to the effort and commitment you put in, but our job is to give you the best possible opportunity to shine.
“My mentor for one of my weeks on placement was a doctor in paediatrics. We would observe ward rounds and were able to ask questions about each patient and their treatment. Then we could stand in on surgeries and procedures that our doctor was doing or thought we would find interesting. While in obstetrics and gynaecology, I was able to see C-sections, an ectopic pregnancy, and went to the clinic for mothers of premature babies.
“The placement definitely helped me decide that I want to do medicine in the future. I have also thought about midwifery as a backup option which I would never have thought of without this experience.”
Dr Maruszewski has been at the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw since 1979 and has previous experience at the Royal Children's Hospital in Liverpool, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Harefield Hospital in London. He is currently the head of this department.
Dr Maruszewski is responsible for treating the full range of congenital heart defects in newborns, infants, and older children. With Dr Maruszewski as your mentor, you are likely to observe multi-stage surgical treatment of the most complex congenital heart diseases, artificial heart chambers, and heart transplantation.
Medical schools in the UK increasingly look to what students have done beyond the classroom to assess their long-term suitability as future doctors, and first-hand work experience can be an important foundation for your UCAS application and university interviews.
One of the things that makes our programmes unique is our houses – safe, secure, lively, and enormous fun! You’ll live with like-minded students from around the world, who quickly become friends you’ll keep for years to come.
From our local Manager to the in-house Chef, and Student Coordinators who are employed purely to make sure you have lots of cool stuff to do, the Gap Medics team will ensure you have the experience of a lifetime – in and out of the hospital.
Maryla grew up in the Polish city of Krakow, and has a fantastic knowledge of all things Warsaw - especially having lived and worked there since graduating university in 2012.
Maryla looks after students in three of our largest departments at MSW Central Hospital in Warsaw: paediatrics, general surgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology. Her close friendships with our mentors in these departments help keep everyone smiling, even on the busiest days. She’s always ready to help and is never more than a phone call away should you need anything.
The particular departments available do vary between hospitals, but in most of our locations we have at least internal medicine, general and orthopaedic surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, emergency room and outpatient departments. Some of our partner hospitals have more specialist departments such as neurology, cardiothoracic surgery, oncology and ophthalmology. If you have a particular preference of where you are placed, let us know at the time you book and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
Placements are available every week of the year, for as long as you want, and registration is a simple online Application Form. We need a £290 registration fee to guarantee your place and give you access to our full preparation service, including your personal Student Experience Manager in our Newcastle Head Office.
We provide a comprehensive package including your hospital placement, professional mentoring, global health tutorials, accommodation, food and 24/7 support from our UK and overseas team. The cost depends on where you go and how long for (see our Prices page), and the full payment isn’t due until 90 days before your placement start date.
