Your programme

On our October half term programme, you will shadow a health professional working in your future career at one of our partner hospitals in Maun. You will gain a brand new understanding of your chosen career. For those of you that are still deciding, this could be what seals the deal.

You will be assigned a personal mentor to answer any questions you have and while the doctors know you are not medically trained, you will be encouraged to observe as much as you possibly can, from surgery to childbirth. Attending our global health tutorials will also give you a great insight into the specific health issues experienced in your host country.

For budding nurses and midwives, you have the chance to get some incredible experience before you submit your UCAS application this January.

Your adventure

Our much-anticipated new Africa programme for under 18s is right on the doorstep of some of the most exciting safari country on Earth! Botswana is an ideal destination for first-time visitors to Africa, being safe and hassle-free, with an authentically African feel. English is widely spoken, including by all of our hospital mentors.

The Gap Medics programme itself is in the friendly little town of Maun (pronounced “Ma-oon”), literally on the edge of the Okavango Delta with super-easy access to weekend safari adventures.

Most of our placements are in the main government hospital, a short drive from the Gap Medics house. Getting here from the UK is easy too, as Maun has its own airport to serve the safari industry, with regular international connections via Johannesburg.
