Grant completed a medical placement at Iringa Regional Hospital.
“After being unsuccessful in all of my options for medicine in 2013, I was looking for ways to bolster my medical personal statement to reapply for medical school. I came across Gap Medics after a friend recommended it to me, and from there I spent two weeks in the obstetric and paediatric wards at Iringa Regional Hospital.
Despite the lack of resources, the doctors I shadowed were determined to do their best and fight for the most positive outcome for their patients. They worked well with what they had and were able to keep things running as smoothly as possible. They were also very keen to pass on their knowledge to us. This kind of exposure is something that is unavailable to us in the UK and being able to take advantage of this learning opportunity was something I was extremely grateful for.
Meeting like-minded people from all over the world was also a unique experience. I made lots of new friends, many of whom I still talk to and keep in contact with today!
I am currently studying medicine at the University of Aberdeen. I believe my Gap Medics experience helped me immensely during the interview process as it gave me something very interesting to talk about. For example, I was able to successfully contrast UK healthcare and Tanzanian health care and share what I learned from my trip with the interviewers. They were impressed!
I would highly recommend a Gap Medics placement to anyone who is thinking about reapplying to university and is wondering what to do to improve his or her application. I owe a big part of my success to Gap Medics.”
