Helen completed a split community healthcare/nursing placement at Dr Antonio Musa Regional Hospital.
I’ve been training to be a children’s nurse for two years. About to enter my final year, I was desperate to immerse myself into something that was both challenging and eye opening. My time in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic did exactly that.
I travelled about eighteen hours and was absolutely exhausted but I was welcomed by a group of lovely staff who helped me settle in right away. I did one week in the community to begin with, which allowed me to see how a small clinic helped families in isolated communities receive the healthcare they needed. I also had the opportunity to visit patients’ homes. That was a huge eye opener; small houses made of wood and tin roof with unsanitary living conditions created significant health problems for the locals.
My second week I was in the local public hospital, providing free health care for the poorest people in the Dominican Republic. I witnessed babies taking their first breath, surgeons fixing bones into position and clearing bowel obstructions. I saw the desperation on mothers’ faces as their child was rushed into the emergency department with respiratory problems, or convulsions which riddled their body. I saw first-hand, a healthcare system which is significantly underfunded yet so resourceful. On my days off I could visit the children in the orphanage, stroll along white sand, paddle in the warm waters, and venture down caves surrounded by rainforest. I feel immensely blessed for this opportunity.
