Joshua completed a split placement in community healthcare and medicine in La Romana.
“My 2 weeks in La Romana with Gap Medics were the best 2 weeks of my life! As an aspiring medic, I wanted to experience healthcare in a different environment and wanted to compare that to the NHS here in the UK, and when I was on placement I definitely experienced a huge contrast.
I decided to do a split placement, my first week in the community and my second week doing a medical placement in the ER. I was surprised at how much responsibility we were given on our placements, especially in the community as each student was treated as a doctor and we all had our own patients to perform vital checks (blood pressure and listening to heart/ lungs etc) on which was fascinating- I never had more than 10 minutes without a patient. I was also able to witness a laparotomy and was in the OR for the entire surgery which has made me seriously consider a career in surgery since I was so intrigued by it- this is something that never crossed my mind before Gap Medics.
Alongside this, I never expected to meet such amazing people and to become really close with them; we did activities together every day and made the most of our weekends- the highlight being Saona Island which was just an amazing way to get to know each other in the beautiful Caribbean scenery. A lot of us still stay in contact now as we want to know how each other get on in their path to becoming healthcare professionals.
All staff, both at head office in Newcastle and in the house at La Romana, want us to make the most of our time there, so much so that an evening/ night shift was organised for us where I witnessed my first birth, one natural but also a caesarean, this was an unforgettable experience and was strangely rewarding- we also felt this after volunteering at the day care during the week. Gap Medics really has confirmed that medicine is for me and has made me even more passionate about becoming a Doctor- something I didn’t know was possible.”
