Lowri completed a midwifery placement at one of our busy partner hospitals in Phitsanulok.
In March 2015, I set off to Phitsanulok, Thailand for a week on the Midwifery placement. I was 18 and by now I was feeling very doubtful towards my future regarding midwifery as I hadn’t done as well as I could in my A-levels due to personal circumstances. I believed that was the end of my journey, I would never be a midwife and I was ready to give up just like that.
I witnessed many beautiful natural and c-section births throughout the week, assisted midwives and doctors on the antenatal, pre natal, labour ward, ultrasound and theatres. The mentors at the hospital were even kind enough to take me around the hospital to have a look around the rest of the departments including the accident and emergency unit to have an insight of how the healthcare system in Thailand works. That was a massive eye opener for me.
Fast forward to now, 2017 I’m about to begin my first year at University as a student midwife. Gap Medics basically saved my midwifery journey as afterwards I managed to carry on through all the hard times and I’m finally on my way to becoming a midwife. The Gap Medics staff and the hospital staff were all extremely supportive and lovely. Experience of a lifetime!
