Seren completed a medical work placement at our busy partner hospital in Kilimanjaro.
“Hi, my name is Seren. I was looking for work experience in hospitals for 16 year olds when I found out about Gap Medics. In July 2014 I travelled to Kilimanjaro with Gap Medics. I believe this experience certainly helped me prepare for my UCAS application for medical school in a number of key ways.
My experience helped me decide if I really wanted to become a doctor. During my time at St. Joseph’s Hospital, I gained invaluable insight into the profession that I couldn’t have received elsewhere. I had shadowed doctors at my local hospital in the UK before but I found Gap Medics more interactive. I learned how to deal with various illnesses, take blood pressure, monitor temperatures and analyse symptoms.
Gap Medics opened my eyes to what studying medicine is really about. I now understand it is about being responsible for lives. I discovered I wanted to study medicine because I want to be challenged and pushed. To me, medicine is compassion. And as Hippocrates said: “Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.”
Gap Medics also helped me gain personal experience. I went to Tanzania on my own which was a little nerve-racking (but exciting!) and the first thing I developed was my confidence and communication skills.
My placement was truly an invaluable experience that will help you stand out from other applicants when writing your personal statement. You will be intellectually stimulated every day, and feel a sense of camaraderie with everyone there with you.
Gap Medics will inspire you.”
